Wednesday BKL - Danby Road in the Green Mountain National Forest

Your Nordic Word of the Week: Vasaloppet- Swedish word ( literally the Vasa Race) for the annual long distance (90 km) cross-country ski race (ski marathon) held on the first Sunday of March in northwestern Dalarna, Sweden between the village of Sälen and town of Mora. It is the oldest, the longest, and the biggest (in terms of participants) cross-country ski race in the world.[1] In the 80th race, held on 7 March 2004, some 15,500 skiers competed in the main event. More than 40,000 participated in one of the seven different races held during the first week of March. The race was first run in 1922, inspired by a run by King Gustav Vasa in 1520. The winner of the first race was Ernst Alm from Norsjö, 22 years old, who is also the youngest ever winner of the race. Vasaloppet is one of the races in the long distance cup Ski Classics. Vermont's own Kerrin Petty won the women's race in 1998!!!

Hello Skiers!

In search of snow and winter we shall go this week for something of a "Vasaloppet" of our own. Let's call it a "Vermontaloppet!"

The Danby Road in the Green Mountain National Forest about an hour from Putney.

What we will find is more than 10k of a maintained snowmobile trail ( with only one snowmobile encountered on Sunday). It is fantastic skiing ( albeit not smooth and perfectly groomed.) a Vermont skiing experience at its best. Deep in the National forest, cold, snowy and seemingly endless.

It is a BIG ADVENTURE to undertake on a school night. We are aware of that, but hope following dinner everyone can still get home at a reasonable time.

We propose meeting at the coordinates below at 415pm - 430pm latest. The ski is an out and back route from the parking area/trail head. The fastest skiers will go out for about an hour and turn around at or near the beaver meadow (or the top of the hill if they can make it) Slower skiers, touring skiers and younger skiers can turn around when they are tagged by the returning faster, older skiers. This way we can be assured that everyone return to the starting point by 615pm.

We will head out by 430 latest, ski in the waning light and return by headlamp. There are no spur trails and the main trail is nice and wide. No one will get lost!

WEATHER: it will be in the mid to upper twenties when we arrive and then rapidly dropping. 7-Day Forecast for Latitude 43.22°N and Longitude 72.82°W A little snow is expected. Dress accordingly and remember we are out in the woods a very good idea to have an extra wind-breaking layer and have on a light weight wool layer if you can.

You will need:

- skate skis or touring skis.

- Headlamp / Flashlight

- waterbottle

- a fanny pack is a good idea.

- A hat is a must

- Gloves!!!!

- a favorite grown-up to ski with you (not required, but Fun)

There will be cookies!

Following our "Vermontaloppet" we can all meet in Chester (on the route home) at Pizza Stone for dinner. Directions to Pizza Stone here: Danby Mountain Tabor Road Number 10, Peru, VT 05152 to Pizza Stone - Google Maps

We hope everyone can join us! this will be a great chance for us to have that long awaited ski!
